I am a modern medical marvel. Since birth, I have been afflicted with hyperacquirosis syndrome; a permanent state of an insatiable thirst for knowledge. While there is no cure, I’ve discovered that school and reading do ease the eagerness to learn and suppresses the fear that I’m incapable of learning all I want to in my lifetime. Certain locations offer me immense relaxation and comfort when the symptoms come on strong, such as the library or the bookstore- where I volunteered because of my affliction. Constant intellectual stimulation is necessary for my well being for without it I feel completely lost and am subject to a bedridden state. But that’s not all that plagues me. My senses are askew. I have a rare case of body dysmorphic disorder- I perceive things differently than you do. For me, my scars are stars, my bruises are simply shadows, my swollen, sprained ankle is just an ankle with a temper, my eyelashes whisper, my mind is a sponge. Due to my blindness, my sense of hearing and touch are highly developed. I hear everything: inner voices, the souls hopes, whispered desires, mumbled yearnings, muffled pain. This provides for a wholehearted understanding of the human mind and heart and allows me to relate to everyone I meet. I also feel everything; compassion for the human beings whose innermost thoughts I hear, the burning passion to help them, the anger towards those that don’t, and the overwhelming awareness of my existence. Being so sensitive to touch as I am, it’s hard to forget that I’m inextricably linked to this earth and to humanity. Couple that with my severe case of â€Å"altrukemia†, the over production of altruism cells in my body, and you get my inability to spend one day in which I don’t help someone. This particular disease affects others the most I believe, the people I help and my grandmother who has to drive me to all the fundraisers, walks, charity events, soup kitchens, etc. She is appeased though, when I offer to cook dinner that night or clean the house. To add to my list of medical anomalies, I am subject to epileptic bursts of ideas. This occurs on a daily basis, when nerve cells in my brain fire electrical impulses at a higher rate than normal, resulting in my innate ability to spew witty counteracts to someone’s logic before they are done with their sentence. This is also the cause of my irregular torrential outpour of ideas at any given time and doctors believe it is the core of my spasmodic creative visions and impulsive whims. A side effect of this are my spastic fingers, constantly grabbing at paper and pens in a frenzy to write, write, write. My most recently discovered malady is pneumonia. You see, Ive got liquid poetry in my lungs, I expel prose with every breath, I release vaporous sonnets that dissolve into the atmosphere. The doctors don’t know what to call it yet- during one of my erratic epileptic episodes I came up with lyrical respiration. I like it, they don’t- I guess that’s just a side effect of my dysmorphic disorder. I really find it quite amazing that I’m able to live such a normal life with all these ailments. I mean, I’m glad that no one treats me any different because of them, although I really should be in some sort of museum. Hmm, I like that idea, being imprisoned in a museum. Oh, no I think my epilepsy is acting up, I can see the coldness of prose in every exhalation and so I write, write, write once more.

Pledge of Allegiance essays The pledge of allegiance is by definition a solemn swear of allegiance to the United States. But recently, it has been under attack by some for its use of the phrase one nation under God. This case was brought up by an atheist from Sacramento who didnt want his second-grade daughter to have to hear the pledge of allegiance. He took it federal court. After a self fought case to the Ninth Appellate Court, the court ruled that the phrase under God is an endorsement to monotheism, thereby in conflict of state and church separation. This ruling came at a tough time in America when everyone was still trying to find an answer to September 11. But, I do believe this to be the right decision. The state-sponsored use of one nation under God is a subtle, but intentional endorsement of religion. In so doing, the government is in breach of the First Amendment to the Constitution. The people who are fighting against the Courts decision to ban the phrase seem entirely to forget about the Constitution. A senior judge who disagreed with the ruling said there was only a miniscule risk that the use of the phrase under God would bring about a theocracy or suppress someones belief. Does something in there sound wrong to you? The judge implies the phrase could and would suppress small portions of Americans. Thats unacceptable. A Harvard professor predicted that the Supreme Court would overturn the decision. Our House of Representatives and the Senate were disgusted by the courts decision. The senate passed a resolution 99-0 showing support for the pledge of allegiance. The lawmakers of the United States are simply playing politics to appease the majority of Americans. Essential Things to Know About Shakespeares Sonnets The collection of 154 Shakespeare sonnets remains some of the most important poems ever written in the English language. Indeed, the collection contains Sonnet 18 – ‘Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?’ – described by many critics as the most romantic poem ever written. It is strange that, considering their literary importance, they were never supposed to be published! For Shakespeare, the sonnet was a private form of expression. Unlike his plays, which were written expressly for public consumption, there is evidence to suggest that Shakespeare never intended for his collection of 154 sonnets to be published. Publishing the Shakespeare Sonnets Although written in the 1590s, it wasn’t until 1609 that the Shakespeare sonnets were published. Around this time in Shakespeares biography, he was finishing his theatrical career in London and moving back to Stratford-upon-Avon to live out his retirement. It is likely that the 1609 publication was unauthorized because the text is riddled with errors and seems to be based on an unfinished draft of the sonnets – possibly obtained by the publisher through illegitimate means. To make things even more complicated, a different publisher released another edition of the sonnets in 1640 in which he edited the gender of the Fair Youth from â€Å"he† to â€Å"she†. A Breakdown of Shakespeare's Sonnets Although each sonnet in the 154-strong collection is a standalone poem, they do interlink to form an overarching narrative. In effect, this is a love story in which the poet pours adoration upon a young man. Later, a woman becomes the object of the poet’s desire. The two lovers are often used to breakdown the Shakespeare sonnets into chunks. The Fair Youth Sonnets:  Sonnets 1 to 126 are addressed to a young man known as the â€Å"fair youth†. Exactly what the relationship is, is unclear. Is it a loving friendship or something more? Is the poet’s love reciprocated? Or is it simply an infatuation? They focused on unobtainable love in a very conventional way, but Shakespeare’s sonnets managed to stretch the strictly-obeyed conventions of sonnet writing into new areas. For example, Shakespeare’s depiction of love is far from courtly – it is complex, earthy and sometimes controversial: he plays with gender roles, love and evil are closely entwined and he speaks openly about sex. The religion of Islam is generally divided into two main schools; the Sunni and the Shi’a.   Of course there are at least five other schools of Islam, however, the Sunni and Shi’a make up the majority of Muslims. (Carmody, 2002)   Of the worldwide Muslim population, the Shi’a account for about thirteen percent.Although this is a small percentage, their influence the world over is strong, especially in the regions of Iraq and Iran where most of them reside. Sunnis, on the other hand, reside mostly in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa. (Smith, 1991)   Although there are some major differences between the two sects, they generally follow the same path of faith, stemming from the founder of the religion, Muhammad.Muhammad was born about 570 C.E.   Around 610 he began to receive revelations which, after his death, were collected into what became known as the Qur’an.   According to Islamic doctrine, these revelations were from a sacred text from heave n which God himself had written.Seeing a prophet in Muhammad, God sent him the angel Gabriel to reveal what was in the book.   (Carmody, 2002) This was the beginning of the religion of Islam.After Muhammad’s death in 632, the religion of Islam began to split. (Carmody, 2002)   The Sunnis began following three main caliphs, or Islamic teachers, who proclaimed themselves the leaders of the religion after Muhammad’s death.Shi’as, on the other hand, refused to be led by the caliphs and claimed that the true leader of Islam was Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali. (Smith, 1991) They believed that the family of Muhammad was the only true authority of Islam.The Shi’a, which literally means â€Å"followers,† has both their own traditions and Islamic laws which differ from that of the Sunnis.   The Shi’as, for instance, although they follow something similar to the Five Pillars of Islam, do not call it that.The Five Pillars is central to the beli ef of Sunnis.   Shi’as, however, also have 5 central tenets, but these they call, UsÃ… «l al-DÄ «n, or the â€Å"Roots of Religion†.   These tenets are TawhÄ «d (Oneness), Adalah (Justice), Nubuwwah (Prophethood), Imamah (Leadership), and Qiyamah (The Day of Judgment). Malcoms Final Speech

Malcolm’s Final Speech Shakespeare’s written work has stood the test of time and Macbeth is an excellent example of his classic literature. At the end of the play the final scene is about who will become the King of Scotland. After the death of Macbeth, Malcolm is declared King. He is declared King since it was his birthright because his father was King before Macbeth killed him. Shortly after he was declared as the new King, Malcolm makes a speech of acceptance. One can look at this passage from many different perspectives. During his speech he talks about rewarding the Thanes and kinsmen that that fought along side him by declaring them the first Earls of Scotland. This demonstrates his honesty, loyalty and it also proves that he is a trustworthy King. Some might argue that this demonstrates that Malcolm is also very trusting of other people. This was one of the traits shown by his father; the trait that led to his downfall. He was too trusting in Macbeth, which gave him the opportunity to kill Duncan. This is not the only item that Malcolm addressed in his speech. He also addresses the state of Scotland. He wants those that were exiled by Macbeth to return home, and for those that supported Macbeth to be exiled. Malcolm wants to exile all of Macbeth’s supporters to ensure that there is not revolt or uprising against him when the nation of Scotland remains in a fragile state. His decisiveness in this regard, is a good quality for a King to have. The most crucial aspect of his speech is when he announces the death of Lady Macbeth. This is critical because Lady Macbeth was the true ruler of Scotland. Macbeth was nothing more than a puppet and Lady Macbeth was the puppeteer. Macbeth was an honorable man turned tyrant by the manipulation of his wife. Lady Macbeth was not evil, but she was driven by greed for power and control. No matter what her status was in the political world, she was not happy with it until she was finally the queen of Scotland. Lady Macbeth took her own life. There were two factors that contributed to Lady Macbeth taking her own life. One of those factors was the fact that she could feel the power slipping away from her. She knew her power and control would not last much longer and she could not accept that. The second, and larger contributing factor that led to her suicide was her conscience. She was tormented because of the things that she and her husband had done. They were horrendous and horrific acts that weighed heavily on her mind. She could not take it anymore, so she decided to jump off of a balcony. Scotland was set free by the death of Lady Macbeth. At the end of his speech Malcolm states that with God by his side, he believes that he will be able to restore peace and harmony in Scotland. In the final line of his speech he invites all to Scone to watch him be crowned and reclaim what was stolen from him. After having examined Malcolm’s speech, it reveals how trusting and decisive Malcolm was and how Lady Macbeth was truly in charge during Macbeth’s reign. Malcolm is a perfect foil to show Macbeths weakness and Lady Macbeth’s power over him. This leaves the reader with the idea that in fact Macbeth was nothing more than a weak coward.

Some companies do not take the time to educate their employees about sexual harassment or the consequences of such behavior. Sexual harassment occurs in all levels of employment, from lower level to the highest levels of management. The best way to end sexual harassment in the workplace is to take the necessary steps to prevent that type of behavior initially. It is important that a distinction be made between what is illegal behavior, behavior that is legally defined as sexual harassment, and what is undesirable behavior in the workplace. It was not until the Anita Hill verses Clearance Thomas case that the seriousness of sexual harassment in the workplace came into the spotlight. Federal law states that for behavior to be considered as sexual harassment that the behavior or actions have to be unwelcomed and create a hostile work environment. The situation between Frank and Mary definitely constitutes a form of quid pro quo sexual harassment. Frank has a known reputation of being a flirt and flirting with female employees. His actions and statements towards Mary were very inappropriate as well as unprofessional. Although Frank did not directly come out and tell Mary what he wanted from her, his intentions were very clear and direct. When Frank made the statement to Mary that he was sure that her client enjoyed â€Å"desert†, he implied that she had given her client some type of special sexual treatment to land the account and he now expected the same if she wanted him to approve her expense account and avoid any trouble for the bosses that are higher up. He abused his power and violated the trust that Mary had in him as a supervisor. Mary remained professional even though she was placed in a position that made her feel uncomfortable and uneasy. Frank violated Mary’s civil rights by sexually harassing her. She took appropriate action and reported the incident to Human Resources. Her employers can be held liable if they take no action to correct the situation. There are a number of legal boundaries in place to protect employees as well as employers when it comes to sexual harassment. It’s imperative that employers have a strict policy regarding sexual harassment and maintain appropriate procedures to address the issue. Once an employee reports or makes a complaint of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior, the employer should initiate an investigation immediately. Mary has the right to come to work and not be harassed. It’s her right to be able to work in an environment that is comfortable and not hostile. Before doing this assignment, my knowledge of sexual harassment was very limited. I had an idea of what constituted sexual harassment but not a broad understanding of the legal definitions and the laws pertaining to and protecting victims of sexual harassment. After doing research, my understanding of quid pro quo sexual harassment is that it occurs when a person gives in or rejects sexual advances or behavior that is sexual in nature and used as a basis or condition of decisions that affect their employment or made as a requirement for employment, very similar to a trade off. This type of harassment can only be committed by a supervisor or another person that has the power to make or influence actions directly related to employment that will affect the employee that is being victimized or harassed. Hostile environment sexual harassment happens when a person’s behavior or conduct interferes with and affects an employee’s performance at work and an offensive or hostile environment develops. Examples of this type of sexual harassment are offensive language, explicit graffiti and request for sexual favors. Employers are not the only people who can create a hostile work environment. Co-workers, supervisors and even clients can create this type of environment. When a hostile environment is present, it can affect the moral of employees as well, overall job performance and the company’s reputation. The damage and harm caused by sexual harassment may not be immediately evident. Humiliation, loss of dignity and self-esteem, destruction of professional reputation and physical and psychological injury are just a few examples of the damage sexual harassment can cause. Unfortunately, sometimes victims of sexual harassment have to choose between their jobs and their personal safety. Many sexual harassment victims are never threatened with firing or lack of advancement but instead suffer repeated abuse by a hostile work environment. Federal Equal Opportunity Laws as well as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibit sexual harassment on the job. In 2007, The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received over twelve thousand charges of sexual harassment. 16.0% of the charges were filed by men. They resolved 11,592 of those charges and recovered forty-nine million dollars for victims. Federal law acknowledges two different sets of legal grounds for claiming sexual harassment under Title VII. The first one is quid pro quo and the second is hostile work environment harassment. When sexual harassment does occur on the job, the victim has the legal right to take their employer to court and sue for damages. Courts follow the doctrine of respondeat superior, which means, the company is held liable even if it had no knowledge of the conduct or behavior. It’s very important that businesses and companies enact strict guidelines and policies concerning sexual harassment. Not doing so places them at risk for liability when an incident of sexual harassment does happen. Claims of sexual harassment can negatively affect a company’s reputation, profits as well as their customers. Lawsuits resulting from sexual harassment cases can cause a company serious financial damage. It’s in the best interest of companies and businesses to educate all of their employees about proper conduct and behavior. They have to educate themselves as well as their employees about boundaries and exactly what constitutes sexual harassment. They must be diligent about what types of behavior is prohibited and unacceptable. A detailed and strict harassment policy should be instituted. Employers have to take immediate and appropriate corrective action when there is a claim of sexual harassment. To avoid and prevent sexual harassment, companies have to act before a problem occurs or develops. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission encourages employers to take all steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. They suggest affirmatively raising the subject, expressing strong disapproval, developing appropriate sanctions, informing employees of their right to raise, and how to raise, the issue of sexual harassment There has to be severe consequences for inappropriate behavior that is deemed as sexual harassment. I believe that if employers inform their employees of the strict penalties that will be enforced in connection with sexual harassment, it will discourage that type of improper behavior. Companies should have a detailed grievance policy and procedure relating to sexual harassment. They need to train their supervisors as well as upper management to deal with issues of sexual harassment. If a company has grievance procedures in place, it will encourage employees to come forward with sexual harassment complaints and provide a sense of security. An effective grievance procedure should provide the victim with alternative methods or avenues for reporting harassment. When an employee reports sexual harassment, the employer should ensure the employee that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and that the complaint will be kept confidential. A victim of sexual harassment must not be forced to address their complaints to a supervisor who is involved in, condones, or ignores the harassment. It’s very important that a company maintain confidentiality, for the sake of the victim as well as the person accused. Once an employer has received a report of sexual harassment, their liability may be reduced or eliminated depending on how quickly and effectively they respond. Under no circumstance should a company or business delay an investigation of sexual harassment for more than a few days. Severe sexual misconduct should be handled immediately. Regardless of how comprehensive or complete a company’s sexual harassment policies and procedures they are bound to fail if a company does not properly and promptly enforce them. Employers must be consistent and aggressive when it comes to sexual harassment. It’s a very serious subject and should be taken seriously at all times. Whatever the situation, a company should take action that is reasonably calculated to end the harassment. Such action must be directed toward the harasser, and may include verbal warnings, written warnings, job transfers, suspension of employment, and, if necessary, termination. In dealing with problems, companies must avoid any measures that penalize the individual who has lodged a sexual harassment complaint. I think that immediate action has to be taken when there is a report of sexual harassment. I think the first step is to launch a full and complete investigation regarding the complaint. Once the investigation is complete, depending on the findings, appropriate action should be taken right away. Penalties for sexual harassment should be based on the severity of the harassment and what extent of damage the victim suffered. One thing is certain, all forms of sexual harassment must be penalized regardless of how innocent the behavior is intended to be. Employees have to be protected from sexual harassment at all costs. When you think â€Å"interview,† you might get an image of the traditional sit-down between you and a hiring manager, but in reality, there are lots of different kinds of interviews that might come up in your job search. It’s important to have a game plan for each kind. Let’s look at these interview types, and what you need to know to ace them.The Classic InterviewThis is the traditional sit-down interview where you go to the hiring company to discuss a specific job opening, and meet with either someone from HR or the person who will be your new boss. This is by far the most common interview type out there.What you need to know: You should be rea dy to field any question, from basic questions about yourself, your professional history, and your resume to more abstract questions about how you would approach the job. The best prep you can do for a classic interview is to make sure you have stories ready to go for all aspects of your resume, examples you can give to illustrate your skills and strengths.This type of job interview is also all about rules and tradition. Make sure you dress well, and are scrupulously on time.The Informational InterviewThis one might be a stretch as a â€Å"job interview,† but you might come across it in your job hunt, especially if you’re just starting out. In an informational interview, you reach out to someone in your target industry or at your target company to get more information about it. You’re the one asking most of the questions, and it’s not attached to hiring for a specific job opening. These can feel a bit impersonal, as the interviewer might be seeing dozens of other people about a particular job opening, but don’t be intimidated. In a job fair interview, you need to be prepared to make a good impression very quickly. You may only have 10 minutes or so to let them know you’re the right one for the job, so speed and efficiency are key.What you need to know: Have your elevator pitch airtight and ready to go. You will likely not have the time to develop a nuanced conversation with the interviewer, so it’s important to have him or her know up front who you are and what your best qualifications are.The Behavioral InterviewA behavioral interview is an interview where you’re asked about how you handled things in the past, or would handle specific situations. It’s basically a scenario interview, where you’re supposed to talk through the process and logic. A behavioral interview (which might be mixed in with more traditional interview questions about your skills and qualifications) is designed to test your problem solving skills, and probe a little deeper into your resume beyond the bullet points on the paper.What you need to know: You can’t really anticipate what exact questions you’ll be asked, but the job description can be helpful. For each job description bullet, come up with a specific anecdote from your past about a time you faced something similar, and how you handled it. Try to have similar stories in mind for your resume bullet points as well.The Puzzle/Case InterviewIn this kind of interview, you’re given specific information and asked to solve a problem. In the business world, you might get a real-world problem like â€Å"how can Pepsi take m arket share from Coke?† In other contexts (tech companies like Google love puzzle interviews), you might get a tricky word or math problem to solve, like â€Å"how many venti coffees can fit in a 10-gallon drum?† It may be something realistic, or absurd- either way, the point is the journey you take to get there, not necessarily the answer.What you need to know: You can’t do much specific prep for this kind of interview, unfortunately. There’s no way to know the specifics of what you’ll be asked to do/quantify/theorize. For case interviews, you’ll be using your general business logic skills, so don’t get too bogged down in the details of the case.The Lunch InterviewLunch is social. A lunch interview, however, is a professional occasion. Don’t get sucked in by the apparent informality of eating with your potential future colleagues, even though this is usually a more conversational kind of interview. It’s typically a way f or the hiring manager to see what you’re like outside of the interview hot seat.What you need to know: Keep it professional. That’s not to say you should avoid the small talk, but be wary of the kind of personal details you discuss. Although you won’t have your resume in front of you next to your plate, try to keep in mind the same kinds of professional points you highlighted in your traditional interview. And even if others are drinking alcohol at lunch, definitely abstain- you want to stay sharp, and it’s never really appropriate to drink in an interview. There’s plenty of time for work happy hours later.The Group InterviewMany candidates go in to a group interview, but very few may come out holding that job offer. It looks a bit like the Hunger Games. It feels like the Hunger Games, if you’re one of the group. This format is common for sales jobs, or jobs or internships that are hiring multiple people at once. It’s an efficiency th ing, and it also lets the interviewing company see how well people do with group dynamics. The most important thing to remember here is that although you’ll be sharing the spotlight with others, the standard interview rules still apply when it comes to staying on topic (your own qualifications) and behaving professionally.What you need to know: The other people in your group are not your enemies, so focus on outshining them instead of sandbagging them. Pay attention to what they say and how their responses are received by the interviewers, because you might pick up tips on how to adapt or phrase your own answers. And slagging other people (even subtly) likely won’t get you very far in this interview format, so being confident and friendly is the mode you want to choose. After all, the interviewer is picking you to be a member of a team, and they need to know that you can play well with others.The Panel InterviewThis one sounds ominous, doesn’t it? The word †Å"panel† conjures up images like congressional hearings, or (more dramatically) firing squads.
